This is so cool! Are video games art? I wish I had thought of this question! November 16, 2010

Not required reading, of course. But take a look at the different views: Link to article (New Scientist, 9/2010)
I loved the video game article, it happens to coincide perfectly with an art project I just did on Marcel Duchamp and also with the paper I am writing for your class. I agree with Jaron Lanier in that at the moment not all video games can be considered art, maybe artistic but not necessarily art. I think the differentiation has a lot to do with the content. Obviously I liked what Jesse Schell had to say using Duchamp as an example. As much as I don’t like Fountain, I love what it did to the art world. I think it would be ignorant not to forsee video games entering the art world more and more as the years pass, like Tom Bissell said. Art is becoming more and more influenced by technology everyday.
Thanks for this! Wondering if you (or anyone)made any use of Danto’s criteria for art in thinking about video games? Would it work to clarify things, or does it not apply well (like with music)?
